Insights from 25+ fashion blog names

By Maria Sjogren

How do you write about fashion without ending up slaving away for a devil wearing Prada? Simple: start a fashion blog.

You’ll certainly have more editorial freedom than if you had a gig at a fashion mag. But all that freedom also means making some tough decisions. Like figuring out exactly what your fashion blog will be about. Or how your site will be designed. And — you know where I’m going with this — what your blog will be called.

And that’s where this post comes in. We’ve asked top fashion bloggers how they named their sites and then used their input to put together this handy guide.

(want to skip right to the blog names? Click the yellow button below)

What’s in a (Fashion Blog) Name?

A lot. A name reflects a brand, or in this case: your personal sense of fashion. As there are already thousands of fashion blogs out there, you need a blog name that stands out, is easy to remember and is a good representation of what your site is all about.

In fact, you can even get inspiration from actual fashion brands. For example:

Nike = the winged god of victory (very suitable for a sports brand sponsoring athletes).

Anthropologie = anthropology (the brand showcases fashion from designers around the world).

Vetements = clothing (they turned the fashion world upside down — you can feel the sarcasm and anarchy brewing).

Anthropologie is an interesting choice as the associations with the name are so strong—who wouldn’t be curious about a fashion brand with roots in anthropology?

Nike, on the other hand, is short and easy to remember (having only two syllables was one of the main reasons they chose it). For those who know Nike is the Greek God of Victory, it also brings about powerful associations. (If you want to find out more, this is an interesting article about their naming strategy…or lack thereof!)

Now, let’s move onto what actual fashion bloggers had to say about the strategies they used to name their blogs.

4 Fashion Blogger Naming Strategies

We asked a few dozen top fashion bloggers how they named their sites. Then we analyzed the responses and examined the different strategies they used. Here are a few trends we noticed:

1) Reflect Your Own Personal Style

Many fashion bloggers told us that their own tastes, or even their personalities, helped them come up with the right blog name.

For example, consider Sunshine Style.

Katie McCarty's blog, Sunshine Style, reflects her upbeat personality.

“A man at my old church used to call me “Sunshine” when I would walk into the room. He said I was always happy and joyous and lit up a room. He was correct. I am always happy and smiling and wanted my blog to reflect that,” said Katie McCarty.

“I want people to come to my blog for not only style but to feel happiness. I also grew up and live in Florida. So the Sunshine represents my roots and love for bright, colorful and coastal style.”

Another example would be Killer Fashion. Blog-owner Nirina said the names reflects her love of the rock and roll side of fashion.

“Before I started the blog, I loved bold fashion-like statement slogans, out-there dresses, spikes on heels, leather, rips and cuts outs, etc. The rock and roll side of fashion!” she said. “I used to think the artists I admired had this killer fashion style, and so when I started my blog, influenced by Louboutin’s killer heels, it was only natural to name the blog Killer Fashion.”

2) Get Inspiration from Your Signature Item

Think about Vetements’ pumps with heels made of lighters. It was their signature shoe. It defined their brand, just like Jimmy Choo’s four-inch heels defined his brand, the dress suit defined Chanel, red soles defined Louboutin and the trench coat defined Burberry.

Just like designer houses have their signature item, you most likely have yours. You can use that as an inspiration for naming your blog. Think about that one item of clothing, or accessory, that always seems to form part of your wardrobe.

If you have several signature items, choose the one which most closely represents your overall style and use that as inspiration for your blog name.

Life in Pumps is a good example of this strategy: “As a shoe addict, most people know and look for my shoes when they see me,” said Tomika, who runs the site. “High heels and fancy shoes have become a source of strength during some trying times in my life...Life in Pumps not only speaks to fashion but finding balance in life.”

Another example is Bowties and Bones: “I began with wearing bowties a lot over neckties, even before I started my blog,” said blog owner Allen Claudius. “Since I was amongst the rare ones in India wearing bowties, I decided to add it in my blog name as an identifier. I also have my puppy Scratch. He loves bones. And I couldn't help but notice how a bone is similar in shape [to] a bowtie. So I added him along in the logo. And called it Bowties and Bones. It was a playoff on how I don't make no bones about fashion.”

3) Go Brave and Bold With Your Name

Samantha Blair's blog Fake Fabulous is her way to describe trying to look as good as I can without having the perfect figure (or massive budget) that people assume we need to actually be fabulous.

An unexpected name makes people stop and pay attention. It creates a pattern interrupt in their minds, which cuts through the digital clutter we’re bombarded with every day.

A great example of this is the name Fake Fabulous. At first glance, the moniker seems to run counter to the “authenticity” you’d expect from a fashion blog. But there’s much more behind this name, as blogger Samantha Blair explains:

“I'm often asked: ‘Why on earth did you call you blog 'Fake' Fabulous? Fake is such a horrible word!’” said Samantha.

“Fake Fabulous is my way to describe trying to look as good as I can without having the perfect figure (or massive budget) that people assume we need to actually be fabulous...hence the 'fake'. Fake Fabulous is all about having fun with fashion!”

The takeaway here: Be bold. Be unexpected. And, maybe, be a bit contrary.

4) Narrow in on a Niche

Several clever fashion bloggers came up with names that are very specific to their niche. The benefit here is that your audience will immediately understand what your focus is.

Take High Street Couture, for example. It’s about the kind of couture you find on the high street.

Lifestyle Fifty is another brilliant example of narrowing in on a specific audience, as owner Jo Castro explains:

Jo Castro says her blog name, Lifestyle Fifty, captures what she wants the site to be about.

“Lifestyle Fifty was one of the names we thought of, and it embodied exactly what I wanted the blog to be about,” said blogger Jo Castro. “It was to encompass life after fifty, the joys, the challenges and the hopes and fears of a generation of women just like me. That it has morphed over the years to be more about fashion and travel is absolutely fine as I see it as a living thing, and within the name, I chose there is scope to pivot as my readership demands.”

Does your blog cater to a specific audience? A certain type of fashion? Or something else that’s unique? Keep that in mind when pondering the name.

Actually Naming Your Fashion Blog

So what’s next? How do you take what you’ve learned in this blog and come up with a name?

Start with brainstorming. Sit down and have a think about:

  1. 1
    Your own personal style
  2. 2
    Your signature clothing item/accessory
  3. 3
Brave and bold statements (pattern interrupts)
  4. 4
    Your niche

Write down the different things that spring to mind. Once you see them on paper, try to connect the dots and come up with a couple of different names. You can always ask friends to chime in too.

After you’ve jotted down some ideas, consider if the names you’ve come up with

  1. 1
make people curious enough to click on them
  2. 2
are easy to recognize and remember
  3. 3
are a good representation of what the blog is all about.

From there, pick your favorite! And remember: you have to live with this name for the unforeseeable future, so pick something that doesn’t just seem like a good name, but which rings true to you.

Fashion Blogger Name Ideas

“The name is two-part. My surname is Witty, which also cheekily describes my personality (or at least, I like to think so!). At the time I'd been blogging for four years already under a really long blog name made up on a whim. I needed to rebrand with something shorter and more catchy. I am constantly sourcing inspiration for my work, creative endeavors and in life generally. So, I wanted to create a name that encapsulated that feeling. In turn, I'd also like to think people come to my corner of the internet and leave it inspired too. So I came up with Inspiring Wit.”

Jenelle Witty

“Sunshine Style was a re-brand from my previous blog name, Katie’s Kronicles. My old blog name didn’t fit with the direction I wanted to head and focused more on lifestyle than style.

I love alliterations so that was the first step. A man at my old church used to call me “Sunshine” when I would walk into the room. He said I was always happy and joyous and lit up a room. He was correct. I am always happy and smiling and wanted my blog to reflect that.

I want people to come to my blog for not only style but to feel happiness. I also grew up and live in Florida. So the Sunshine represents my roots and love for bright, colorful and coastal style.

So I knew I wanted to incorporate Sunshine into my name. ☀️ The next part was easy. Since I wanted an alliteration, Style just followed suit. Sunshine Style was born. It’s easy to remember and I also kept in mind a name I would want to follow me 5,10,15 years down the road I wouldn’t tire of.”

“Before I started the blog, I loved bold fashion like statement slogans, out-there dresses, spikes on heels, leather, rips and cuts outs, etc. The rock & roll side of fashion! I used to think the artists I admired had this killer fashion style, and so when I started my blog, influenced by Louboutin’s killer heels, it was only natural to name the blog Killer Fashion.”

“Blog was initially My Mommy’s Neighborhood as part of my real estate business. Once life took an unexpected turn, I rebranded to make the blog more about what I was currently focused on. As a shoe addict, most people know and look for my shoes when they see me. High heels and fancy shoes have become a source of strength during some trying times in my life and people always speak to not being able to walk in them. Life in Pumps not only speaks to fashion but finding balance in life.”

“I began with wearing bowties a lot over neckties, even before I started my blog. Since I was amongst the rare ones in India wearing bowties, I decided to add it in my blog name as an identifier. I also have my pupper Scratch. He loves bones. And I couldn't help but notice how a bone (sketch) is similar in shape a bowtie. So I added him along in the logo. And called it Bowties and Bones. It was a play off on how I don't make no bones (addage/phrase) about fashion.”

Allen Claudius

“First, I created a Word Doc of words that inspired me. I took a deep dive into other fashion blogs and thought about what I liked or didn't like about their names. I also talked to friends and family members, which I think is key. I came up with a few possibilities and had people vote on what they liked the best. In the end, it was my older brother who came up with "Kat's Fashion Fix." I wanted something that included my name because it's more personal. However, my name (Kathleen) felt too long and sounded awkward in a blog name. That's where Kat came from. "Fashion Fix" tells people up front what my blog is about, which I also think is important. I wanted something straightforward and personal, but also something that rolls off the tongue. I didn't want anything that was too complicated or that was too hard to spell or remember either.”

Kathleen Harper

“My names is Vanessa Valiente, so I wanted it to be about me, but still have the versatility to be bigger than me. My nickname as a kid was VV, as I got older it shortened to Vee. Hence, V-Style. Before I settled on it though, I focus grouped it with about 15 people I knew. Everyone loved V-Style more than anything else. Simple, chic, memorable.”

Vanessa Valiente

“My name is Sayeri and since my childhood days, I love writing Diary, where I used to pen down all my thoughts, my daily incidents and all. When I was planning to open up my own blog I thought its going to be my Digital Diary where I would write all my thoughts, my styling tips, fashion stories and all. So the name popped up as Sayeri Diary.”

Sayeri Bhattacharya

“It started as a fashion blog, hence "closet" and my name is Lorna Catherine, which is where the "LC's" comes from”

Lorna Catherine

“I launched my blog after writing for magazines for many years. I wanted an outlet to creatively share "the best of the best" in fashion, beauty, and travel. Since the blog was focusing on luxury items, I wanted a name that instantly denoted luxury, also a name that would correlate with my double C initials. I immediately thought of Caviar & Cashmere, which are two luxury items that when thought of, immediately make the reader think of luxury.”

Caitlyn Chase

“I came up with a name in a matter of minutes. I was a French-language student at the time and I thought a French name would be fun. I knew that I wanted to curate content that I was passionate about (and some that I might not necessarily share in person). So "the vaulted passion" which vaguely translates to "la passion voûtée" popped into my mind. And it has stuck ever since.”

“It used to describe the type of posts I did - Look for less, designer vs high street, high street vs couture.”

Kaithlin Corcoran

“It was originally called School Gate Style as I was a mum at the school gates myself. Once my kids got older, I named it A Life to Style to reflect the broader content I now cover.”

“It was inspired by Stella & Dot, and the reasoning behind their brand's name: their grandparents' names. Honey & Betts was random/generic enough to explore many writing subjects like motherhood, fashion, travel, food, and beauty.”

“a clothes horse is a framed used to dry clothing, it also means a person excessively interested in fashion. I was familiar with the term because I grew up with my mother using a clothes horse to dry clothes and when I was brainstorming ideas for my blog, I liked the idea of a name that described me and my interests without boxing me in too much. it means a person interested in fashion, but that person could also be interested in other things as well. back when I started as well everyone was using pseudonyms rather than their real names online, so this also appealed as it allowed me to be more anonymous. it wasn't "a clothes horse" by rebecca, but rather the blog and person were all one name.”

“This blog starting as a writing elective class in college, so I originally set out to share both life and style content that focused on bringing joy into daily life. So "Chasing whimsy" was another fun way to express searching for joy.”

“One very hot day as we were walking across a hotel car park in Perth, Western Australia, she, myself and my husband starting talking about possible blog names. "It has to be something easy to spell and also be meaningful," I said. Lifestyle Fifty was one of the names we thought of, and it embodied exactly what I wanted the blog to be about. It was to encompass life after fifty, the joys, the challenges and the hopes and fears of a generation of women just like me. That it has morphed over the years to be more about fashion and travel is absolutely fine as I see it as a living thing, and within the name I chose there is scope to pivot as my readership demands.”

“i originally was going to name my blog my nickname (back when i started it, i had no idea i would keep it as long as i have or that blogs would be a public thing vs. something you used to share info with family/friends like facebook). but then i saw some other blogs, like susie bubble that had catchy names. i thought about the brands i followed, and some ad campaigns i saw, and one was "j'adore dior." it was printed on t-shirts, bags, etc. i love fashion so i thought "j'adore couture" was a cute play on that idea.”

Kim mitchell

“I was thinking of names around fashion and made a mindmap as to what all comes to my head when I think of fashion. Among many words, the word 'fictitious' popped into my head since it is different to each and very imaginative.”

Akanksha Chawla

“I started it off as a fashion blog but my topics eventually diversified to food, travel, pets and even video games. Thus, since I blogged about various different interests of mine, I decided to name it I Want It All.”

“I have always loved shopping, I still do actually and I'm not afraid to say that I'm a shopaholic. I have also always loved fashion and my sister and friends would often ask me for outfit advice. If we were out at a store I would tell them if the clothes fit them right. But more often then not we were at my house and often times I would just go into my closet and add an accessory, shoes or even a dress. I mean I have a huge closet, so it made sense to call my blog Shopaholic's Closet, where I invite my friends to shop in my closet and now you can too.”

“I started out as a lifestyle, DIY and nail art blog. Nature fascinates me the most and I wanted the name to be something covers everything under the sun yet be something beautiful. and the sunlight is what makes the moon, shine beautifully, hence the name.”

“I originally just wanted to document (and hopefully) my style for one year as I approached my 40th birthday, so I brainstormed all phrases and expressions to do with being older/over 40 and with reference to fashion and style. I wrote down the phrase "mutton dressed as lamb", and as that was exactly what I was trying to avoid, I crossed out "mutton" and replaced it with "not". I liked the ring it had to it, plus I knew it didn't sound anything like any other blog name and it wouldn't date as I got older. Hence - Not Dressed As Lamb...!

CATHERINE SUMMERS

“My husband and I came up with the name together. I knew I wanted to document my outfits while sharing all of our world-wide travels, fashionably inspiring wanderlust! Velvet is the fashion side of my world sharing my outfits, and Vino is our love for wine and travels.”

Becky Kung

“I started off my working life as a fashion/personal stylist in London, then moved to NYC with my family and found the ladies of New York all wanted to look exactly the same. This all got a bit dull on the styling front so I decided to take some fashion journalism classes - the first piece of homework was to start a blog - this was the spring of 2009 when bloggers were beginning to become a little infamous in the fashion week front rows. I had a day to come up with a title and figured 'I'm a stylist and I could make some notes' - hence the name Notes From A Stylist”

“I'm often asked..

"Why on earth did you call you blog 'Fake' Fabulous? Fake is such a horrible word!"

Fake Fabulous is my way to describe trying to look as good as I can without having the perfect figure (or massive budget) that people assume we need to actually be fabulous... hence the 'fake'.

I am just a normal woman making the most of what genetics, life and three pregnancies have done to my body.

I have a teeny-tiny clothing budget and never visit a beauty salon (apart from the hairdressers).

Most of my money is spent on bills and our 4 children.

BUT…

I still want (and deserve) to look good and I refuse to buy cheap rubbish!

Faking confidence is something I do on a regular basis, and fashion is the perfect way to do it.

Fake Fabulous is all about having fun with fashion!

“I did a lot of research before finalising Fashiongoodtimes. I like this name because A. It's on fashion niche. B. It's sounds like a magazine C. It's easy to remember.”
