Insights from 30+ Beauty & Makeup Blog Names

Forget diamonds. Makeup is a girl’s best friend.

Which means makeup blogs are a dime-a-dozen.

Lipstick. Polish. Blush. Repeat.

But there’s more to it than that.

Whether your fans-to-be are stuck on a deserted island south of nowhere or climbing the penthouse stairs to an ultra-glam party certified exclusive, makeup is your ally and theirs.

Use it.

Love it.

And make them remember you.

It all starts with your blog’s name.

If they don’t love it, they won’t love you. Hell, they won’t even find you.

So make it fun. Make it glamourous. And make it count.

A Makeup Blog By Any Other Name…

Choose the wrong name and you’re screwed.

Dark, endless holes are waiting to suck you in and spit you back out into the middle of internet la la land.

Can you climb back out? Maybe, but it’s tough. It’s waaaaay easier to stay out of that internet void in the first place. And that means picking the right name.

What’s in a name, anyway?

Only everything. Your personality. Your style. Your vibe. What your blog is freaking about.

“You want it to mean something to you, to be a reflection of you but not too personal,” said the owner of Fingers Polish Mania. She nailed it with her ideas. “My nickname in high school was Fingers because I played the piano all the time.”

Polish. Piano. Fingers. Got it, love it, and so do her followers.

Think you can get away with something generic? Hell no. Generic equals lazy. And the last thing a girl (or guy) wants in their makeup blogger is laziness.

Lipstick lovers want makeup tips from tigresses, not sloths.

Think strategy. Think cunning. Think like a freaking makeup blogger. And learn from those who have come before you.

4 Makeup Blogger Naming Strategies

We asked 30+ top makeup bloggers what tips, tricks, and strategies they had for naming their sites. We used a super-duper high-tech gadget called our brain to analyze their responses, and we found a few trends.

1) Time to Get Personal

People don’t follow makeup, they follow makeup bloggers.

They’re your friends. Your fans. Your reason for writing.

And that means they need to know something about you. We’re not talking addresses and phone numbers. No one wants to get stalked.

Barbie Ritzman tapped into her personal story whennaming her blog: Barbie's Beauty Bits.

Just give them a little something. A peek into your life and a reason for caring about your blog. That’s the approach Audrey at Mademoiselle Nature used when coming up with her name.

“I wanted a name that reflects my French background and that embodies my passion for natural beauty products/green Iifestyle. ‘Mademoiselle’ also adds this ‘je ne sais quoi’ and gives that chic/simple/Frenchy vibe.”

Followers want people, not robots. That means emotion, personality, and insights into what makes you tick. Your blog’s name is an easy way to do that.

Barbie Ritzman at Barbie’s Beauty Bits tapped into her personal story and used it when finding the perfect name.

“My name is Barbie, and I've always loved makeup, beauty, and fashion! I could never get enough of it, and because of this, I would always try to create my own beauty.”

She started with her name, worked in her love for beauty, and followed it up with a double dose of personality.

“My joy for reinventing things started as a kid in the late 70's when I tried out tricks like placing drops of glue on a window sill, waiting for them to harden so I could reform to make fake nails… Looking back, these ideas or Beauty Bits, as I call them, were inventive and well before their time.”

It tells more than just her love for makeup. It tells her story.

Now it’s time to tell yours.

2) It’s All About Passion

It’s a makeup blog. Chances are pretty good that makeup is one of your passions. We get it. So does your audience.

This is when laser beam focus comes in handy. Think about the type of makeup you love. Or forget makeup altogether and give your would-be audience a teaser into your personal life.

Alice in Wonderland inspired the name of Maliha Rao's blog: Red Alice Rao.

Sarah at Boxnip went with choice number one and used it to zero in on her audience.

“I loved beauty boxes, a lot. So when coming up with a name I tried all different names incorporating beauty boxes but nothing felt right. I said, what about 'Boxnip'. It was short, catchy and I thought it would be a name people would remember.”

She was right, and her idea paid off. Four years and running Boxnip is still going strong.

But it’s okay to think outside the makeup box too. Give people a peek into your other passions. That’s exactly what Maliha Rao did with her blog Red Alice Rao.

“I love the color red, and I can relate to Alice's character in Alice in Wonderland. It’s my all-time favorite fiction, and Rao is my family name which I am proud of.”

Red Alice took three things she was passionate about and combined them for one personalized blog name that works for her and her followers.

Get passionate. Get followers. Get going.

3) Challenge the Status Quo

Everyone loves a rebel. When you challenge the status quo, you stand out. Fighting stereotypes and telling people that “normal” is whatever you make it can gain you followers fast.

Anshulika Chawla’s inspiring story at Road2Beauty is what sets her apart and makes her blog so popular.

“Born with a slightly protruding upper jaw, I always dreamed of looking normal and beautiful. Because I couldn't do anything about this flaw of mine, I started focusing on areas which I could do something about—my skin and body.”

For Anshulika it was about finding confidence she didn’t know she had and rolling with it. Then helping others do the same.

“The search for health and beauty led me to the creation of this blog - the steps I took, the products I used, the research I did… signify my journey to beauty, and so I named my blog Road2Beauty.”

Cindy at Prime Beauty is another blogger who turned the tables on status quo and used it to find her niche.

“My blog focuses on women over 40. I don't consider this age old, but in their prime. Thus, the name Prime Beauty.”

Simple. Appealing. And a guaranteed audience. Women over 40 are gonna love being the center of attention for once, and younger women are gonna face 40 someday.

Think like a rebel, blog like a rockstar. It’s a guaranteed combo for success.

4) Get Catchy, Get Crazy, Get… Your Pets Involved?

Don’t overthink things. Sometimes your blog name is staring you right in the face… or licking it.

Jenn at Hello Rigby took inspiration from her BFF. “My dog is named Rigby, and I named it after him.”

Jenn's blog — Hello Rigby — was named after her KP companion.

Simple. Fun. And animal lovers go gaga for it. Jenn’s even added pictures of Rigby to her site for a fun look into the girl behind the blog.

Tiffany at Paws and Polish used a similar idea when coming up with her name, combining three things from this list—passion, personality, and pets.

“I wanted something to portray my biggest passions in life, which are nail art and animal rescue.”

Don’t worry if you’re without a fur baby. People love crazy and catchy almost as much as they love pets. Crazy Nailzz figured this out and used it to her advantage.

“When I started doing nails as an amateur, people were not aware of the nail art stuff and used to call me crazy... So I combined two things... Crazy Nailzz!”

It’s easy to remember and says a lot about what she’s doing.

Catchy is all about word play. If you’re good at it, you can gain traction and have fun.

Claire Kerr at Kerruticles is a wordplay whiz. “My blog is about nail art and nail polish. The name Kerruticles is play on my surname, Kerr, and the word cuticles.”

It’s the perfect combo of catchy and personal.

The key takeaway? A captivating name is more than a nice idea, it’s a must-have.

If you don’t have that, you don’t have a blog. So brainstorm, research, and find a name that will stick with you and your followers.

So Now What? Actually Naming Your Blog

Okay, it’s time. We’ve covered the basics. We’ve delivered the goods. Now it’s time to crunch the names and find what works for you.

Make a list, ask your friends for help, give your pet a treat and see what they’ve got to say on the matter.

The point is not to go crazy. Have fun with it. And when you get lost, just remember the most important thing in a blog’s name—honesty.

What is it you want to do? To say? To be?

Your name should reflect your vision.

Keep it real.

Keep it catchy.

Keep it simple.

Stick to that, and you’ll be good.

But he had zero ideas about beauty and the beauty industry. So he said he would contribute to some technical stuff, product reviews, etc. Hence the blog www.beautyandthegeek.online. Beauty for reviews related to beauty products. And geek for some technical posts which my friend would contribute.”

At the end of the story, he discovers that he is a swan and that he will one day be beautiful like his true parents. “When I first decided on starting my own blog, I wasn't sure what I wanted to write about. While I travelled a lot and am a good storyteller, friends also asked me for advice about skin and hair care. So I did not know if I would stick to only stories about my travels or beauty.

After a little research I found out a lifestyle or a travel & beauty blog is a good blog niche.

When it was time to decide on a name, II kept asking friends and family what would be a good name for my blog that would go with my niche and my personality. It was when my husband said, 'you always say this blog is your space why don't you name it 'my little space' or something like that. I found the idea of that name cute. I played around the idea a little bit and came up and now we have 'Her Little Space'”

Preeya Darshini

“My name is Eros. I asked my high school classmates to give me a Chinese name and they said Yu Rou Si because it sounds the same. When I asked they what it meant, they gave me random characters, Yu = fish, Rou = Meat, Si = Die. Basically its a Chinese pun on my real name”

“My blog focuses on women over 40. I don't consider this age old, but in their prime. Thus, the name Prime Beauty.”

“I wanted a name that was personal and very easy to adapt to my changing subject matter. You can’t know when you start a blog which direction your blog will take you and a versatile title is important. I didn’t want to be stifled by my blog title so it’s essentially just my name and “looks” to reflect my broad subject- beauty.”

“My name is Barbie, and I've always loved makeup, beauty, and fashion! I could never get enough of it, and because of this, I would always try to create my own beauty, as the more I had, the better. This passion or creative hunger as my mom would call it has turned me into the D.I.Y. beauty guru I am today.

My joy for reinventing things started as a kid in the late 70's when I tried out tricks like placing drops of glue on a window sill, waiting for them to harden so I could reform to make fake nails. In the late '80s, I mixed foundation with alcohol & baby oil to create a one-time self-tanner spray for my legs, which didn't appear orange like those that were the top brands of the day. Before the "Wonderbra" was created and sold in stores, I would take shoulder pads, fold them over and insert them into the sides of my bra, ultimately creating cleavage. Oh, in the early '90s, I would purchase hair that was meant to be weaved in with other hair to make hair extensions. Instead of weaving the hair in, I placed hair barrettes on the hair wefts and clasped it in my tresses, making my own extensions. Today, this is what is sold as clip-in hair.

Looking back, these ideas or Beauty Bits, as I call them, were inventive and well before their time, where years later, others with similar thoughts created and sold. If only I had put my ideas out there! Well, no sense crying over what could have been because I'm doing it now. Every day, I am always trying to create or find new alternatives for things, which I don't have access to at the time or couldn't figure out what some would say, "the right way to do it." So I've mastered new ways, to get the same look, or a better look, than the original. Resulting in my giving a beauty guide to all things BEAUTYful...by me, for you.
